In 1970 Mykola Makarovskyi graduated from the Physical department of Kharkiv State University and started working at Crystal physics chair. In 1978 he defended the thesis 'Research of mechanisms and kinetics of diffusion disintegration of films on solid substrates' for obtaining the Candidate o Sciences degree. He worked as laboratory assistant, junior researcher, senior researcher, and docent.

Since 1985 he is working as docent at the Physical Optics chair. In 1990—2009 he was a Deputy dean for educational affairs of the Physical department. He published over 50 scientific works in leading scientific journals and in proceedings of international conferences. He is a coauthor of three workbooks on laboratory workshops. He is the Head of Methodological commission of the Physical department and the Curator of Kharkiv regional section 'Physics' of Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

For fruitful work he was awarded with 'Distinguished Education Worker' sign in 2003 and with the Order of Merit in 2007.

Scientific interests: resonance absorption of light in granular films on solid substrates.

  • For Bachelor's degree applicants gives lecture courses 'Atomic Spectroscopy' and 'Molecular Spectroscopy'.
  • For Master's degree applicants gives lecture courses 'Optics of Thin Films' and 'Luminescence and Non-Equilibrium Processes in Solids'.
  • For postgraduates of the Physical department gives lecture courses 'History and Methodology of Physics and Astronomy' and 'Selected Chapters of Modern Optics and Laser Physics'.
  • Takes an active part in organization and functioning of retraining courses for physics teachers of elementary schools of Kharkiv city and Kharkiv region.
